I’m confused

I don’t know whether I’m an idiot or The Box is utter shit. Would someone be so kind and explain to me what that film is about? Pretty please?

I mean, I do understand all the experimentation with humans plot. It’s clear to me that it’s very hard to tell apart magic from good science/technology. Pain, love, sacrifice, curiosity, they’re all ticked off.

But, what’s with the waterfall-gates/portals/gateways (or whatever they are) that transport people along with 10,000 liters of water? I didn’t get that cheap sci-fi dose… And what’s with the deformed-face man, is he important or not? They never clarify that…

I was open to any type of ending, any kind of answer - since it seemed that the film kind of promised them. I guess I was just not ready for none.

Or maybe it’s just that I don’t like Cameron Diaz (just kidding!).
